Arjen van Rijn is a professional, experienced and leading expert in the area of constitutional and administrative law. As a veteran of the profession, he knows exactly how things work in the relationship between government and citizens.
Education and career
Arjen joined the team at De Clercq as a lawyer and partner in 2013. Prior to this, his positions included Senior Counsel at Spigt Litigators in Amsterdam and, from 1995 to 2011, partner at Pels Rijcken & Droogleever Fortuijn in The Hague. Since 2009, he has also been a Professor of Constitutional Law and Constitutional Reform by special appointment to the University of Curaçao. However, Arjen started his career many years ago in a completely different arena: as a journalist in Germany for Elsevier and KRO, among others.
Arjen’s daily practice
‘I can be contacted for legal support in matters relating to constitutional and administrative law. This complex, yet interesting area of the law covers everything concerning political science, how the government functions and the relationship between government and citizens. I specialise in the constitutional law of Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten and the Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba) and in relationships within the Kingdom (i.e. the Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands). Other areas that I find particularly interesting to work in are integrity and governance, monument conservation, healthcare and fundamental rights.’
